Of the three imperatives in this verse – Ephesians 4:32 this is without a doubt the most difficult for some to obey. The verse states, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” I will share a number of various thoughts on this concept, but I want you to focus now on just the idea of extending forgiveness.
I have known many who have harbored anger, bitterness, and unkind thoughts for years. The idea of not extending forgiveness to someone will cripple you, and often not even impact the other person. (Many times they don’t even know of the harbored ill thoughts) Anger and bitterness only destroy and weaken the container and the vessel that holds them. If you read verse 30-31 right before this verse you will see that you are grieving the Holy Spirit when you decide to not extend forgiveness.
